Sean's Computer Animation: Little Terra

Tons of tips on character animation and commercial production!

Mom with TOPIX flag

Above is a scene from commercial number four using the cloth plugin from Topix. It works great, and best of all, it's free!!

For the past few months I've been working on a project for a series of commercials for NTT/Docomo Cellular phones. The four commercials we've done so far have been produced from start to finish by basically three people: myself, Leslie Fulton, and Wilson Tang, with the addition of Yoshimatsu Sozo for the latest one.

Here you can see some scenes from commercial number four. Click on the picture to see a larger version.

Dieseloid dripping oil and generally being a pest, Dieseloid's debut.

And this image shows how the Dieseloid bar scene was rendered in layers. I prefer to render in layers as it provides a lot more control over the final output. In this case, however, there was no real choice, as the scene was too heavy to render at one time. Click on the image to see the final render.

MoM, (Multi-Orbital-Sensory monitor) was built in Prisms and then brought into Softimage. This was relatively painless, except that Softimage cares very deeply about which way polygon normals are facing, whereas Prisms doesn't really care unless vertices are shared. Some parts had to be rebuilt so that they would render in Softimage. See the tutorial page to see how I set up a system of sliders and switches to automate her.

Mom Floating Anim GIF

I built the MOM character you saw on my home page in Prisms and Softimage. Why not check out a QuickTime of MOM or some of the commercials we have been doing? Choose .avi files if you're on a PC, and .mov if you're on a Mac. Or go to the Satelight home page and see stills and other Terra-related things.
